Hierarchies of Structure-Function Relationship in the Neurosciences

1990
In biology the relationship between structure and function is a central question which must be answered anew at each newly achieved level of knowledge in this science. At present we understand biological organizations in terms of the system theory as structural/functional entities, i.e. functional systems which as such in the form of hierarchic orders of net-like connections with other functional systems contribute to the maintenance of a superior unit or a system of higher complexity (Benninghoff 1935/36, 1936/37, Rothschuh 1963)
