Immediately after the introduction of multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) scanners in 1998, one became aware that not only hyperdense but also hypodense areas within contrast-enhanced axial slices could be seen (see Fig. 1). The question to be answered was whether these areas are artifacts or atherosclerotic plaques.
