Biohazards associated with the materials used in Dentistry

2015
AIM: This article reviews the biohazards associated with dental materials used . OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this review article is to study about the biohazards of materials used in dentistry. BACKGROUND: The materials generally used for restoration like amalgam etc. are considered as bio hazardous materials. These materials are manufactured with the aim to be insoluble and stable. The acrylic components of composite material is also toxic enough to cause systemic problems. Some of the dental restorative materials can cause harm to the patients and dental personnel. It can cause allergic contact dermatitis , conjunctival symptoms and asthma. Once the environmental pH changes, temperature, pressure also changes and causes corrosion and abrasion can allow the bacteria to use the mercury in amalgam and toxicate it. The minute components mixed with these materials leach out of permanent restorative material and tend to cause toxic reactions
