Synthesis and Characterization of the LiFePO4-LiMnPO4 Solid Solution

2011
Introduction Due to their good ionic conductivity and high thermal stability, polyanionic compounds such as LiMXO4, M = Mn, Fe, Co or Ni, X = S, P, As, Mo and W have received much attention in recent years as promising new cathode materials for lithium-ion secondary batteries.[1] Among the most promising of these substances are the olivine structured lihium metalphosphates triphylite LiFePO4 and lithiophilite LiMnPO4. Due to their analog structure and similar ionic radii of Fe and Mn these two materials are mixable in any ratio thus forming a solid solution.[2] In this abstract we present our findings on synthesis and characterization of LiFexMn1-xPO4 x=0-1 orthophosphates.
