New projections for Hawaii's ocean industries: A strategic orientation

Hawaii's ocean industries are forecast to grow at 4.5% per year over 1992-98, generating annual revenues of $3.8 billion and employment of about 20,250 in 1998. Ocean industry revenues are expected to grow as fast as tourism revenues over this period and to roughly equal the total direct expenditures for construction in 1998. After the rapid rate of growth realized during the 1980s, deceleration to the sustainable level forecast for ocean industries during the 1990s will require adjustment to new market-based realities. Most notably, opportunities will have to be more aggressively sought in the international arena with growing emphasis placed on Asia and the Pacific islands.
