A 7.02-Mev LEVEL IN Ne$sup 2$$sup 0$

1961
A 7.02-Mev level in Ne2O was observed in a study of gamma-alpha coincidences from the reaction C/sup 12/(C/sup 12/, alpha gamma y)Ne/sup 20/. It has some of the properties e xpected for a 4-rotational level based on the 2- level in Ne/sup 20/ at 4.97-Mev. The level was located by observing alpha particle spectra, in a 10/sup 4/ OMEGA cm silicon p-n solid state counter, in coincidence with gamma rays from Ne/sup 20/ low-lying levels. The alpha counter was situated at 0 deg to the incident beam of C/sup 12/ ions bombarding a 50 mu g/cm/sup 2/ carbon foil. Three 0.4 mg/cm/sup 2/ aluminum foils were used to prevent the C/sup 12/ ions from hitting the alpha counter. The gamma rays were observed with a 5-inch diameter by 6-inch long Na(Tl) crystal.
