Coping with linguistically denied nuanced properties: a matter of fuzziness and scope

1998
We present new developments of an ongoing research bearing on the representation of linguistically negated nuanced properties. The formalisation comes within the context of fuzzy set theory and introduces a compatibility level and a tolerance threshold to render nuanced strength values of modified properties in the scope of a negation. These two parameters permit to compute a relevant reference frame from which the possible values of a linguistic negation of a property A appearing in the statement "x is not very A", for example, could be extracted. We extend here Pacholczyk's (1997, 1998) approaches by introducing now the different scopes of the negation operator to obtain different plausible interpretations.
