Estimation of J-resistance curves based on front face displacement records

2021
Abstract In ASTM E1820, load line displacement records for compact tension specimens are required for calculating J-resistance curves. In nuclear engineering, a small front face compact tension specimen is viewed as an alternative test specimen. Based on energy principle, the J integral equation based on front face displacement records is formulated. Then, connecting the normalization data reduction method, the calculated J-resistance curve results from FFD-based J integral equation are compared with the results from LLD-based J integral equation. Results show that J-resistance curves estimated from two methods are fairly consistent. Thus, the proposed FFD-based J integral equation would be recommended to estimate J-resistance curves and fracture toughness using front face displacement records.
