Viscous Scalar Rarefaction Waves

We study the pointwise behavior of rarefaction waves for scalar viscous conservation laws. Our primary goal is the analysis of the initial layer and large time behavior of the solution of the Riemann problem. We use the Green's function approach, making essential use of the Hopf--Cole transformation for the Burgers equation.
