Implementation of PCTides in NITES II: A Focus on Mean Lower Low Water Reference

2006
Abstract : This document provides information concerning the implementation of the Naval Research Laboratory PCTides model in the Naval Integrated Tactical Environmental System (NITES) II for predicting the times and heights of sea surface levels and the speed and direction of tidal currents. The purpose is to provide guidance for model development and implementation upgrades that will better support tactical users of the NITES II software. Focus is placed on the representation of tidal heights with a reference to mean lower low water (MLLW), rather than the mean sea level (MSL) reference currently used in PCTides outputs. A complete algorithm has been developed to convert from an MSL reference to an MLLW reference using information available from the PCTides model. The algorithm is presented, and its performance is evaluated by comparing MLLW offsets from MSL calculated from simulated PCTides output with offsets more accurately determined from tidal coefficients. Additionally, a limited evaluation of the overall accuracy of the PCTides model is provided, and the implications for MLLW reference conversion are discussed. Recommendations for model development and a road map for improved implementation are presented.
