Investigation on the current status of emotional intelligence and empathy ability of nursing undergraduates

Objective To investigate the status of emotional intelligence and empathy ability of undergraduate nursing students, and to provide basis for the development of emotional intelligence and empathy ability. Methods The general data questionnaire, emotional intelligence scale(EIS) and Jefferson empathy scale were used to investigate 50 undergraduate nursing students. Results The average score of emotional intelligence of undergraduate nurses was(118.98±15.30). The scores of emotional perception, assessment and expression were the lowest.The average total score of empathy was(108.72±16.00). The score of emotional nursing was the lowest.The correlation analysis showed that the dimensions and total scores of emotional intelligence were positively correlated with the dimensions and total scores of empathy.Taking courses or knowledge training related to emotional intelligence was related to the improvement of emotional intelligence and empathy ability. Conclusions Emotional intelligence and empathy ability are closely related.Undergraduate nursing students should offer courses related to emotional intelligence to improve their emotional intelligence and empathy.
