Simultaneous manganin gauge and visar measurements of shock wave profiles

2008
Shock wave profiles have been measured by many techniques probing the stress or particle velocity histories of shocked materials. Amongst the most commonly used methods are velocity interferometry and embedded foil stress gauges. It is relatively unusual to employ both these techniques simultaneously in an experiment to compare the responses of the two. Examples will be given of the relative responses of the two techniques in metals, ceramics and glasses to illustrate the reproducibility of the gauge.
