Study of elastic. pi. /sup + -/ p interactions at 40 GeV/c in the impact parameter representation

The results of studying elastic ..pi../sup + -/ p scattering at 40 GeV/c in the impact-parameter representation are given. The overlap functions and rms radii in the transverse plane are determined. The pion-proton transparency for a head-on collision is 0.17, which is four times the analogous quantity in pp scattering. The evolution with energy of the transparency and the eikonal is discussed.
