Study to Follow Up Cases of Acute Pesticide Poisoning from 1-2012 to 12-2014 in Upper Egypt

Poisoning is an important health hazard and one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A three year retrospective study of cases of acute poisoning in Upper Egypt investigated by Assiut forensic laboratory in the period from January 2012 to December 2014 was conducted to investigate the patterns, trends, incidences and types of poisons.. The recorded cases were ninety -six in number, forty-three of them were males and fifty-three were females, ranging in age from fourteen to sixty-one years old. As for toxic substances that have been abused has been monitoring of fifty one cases of poisoned as a result of the abuse of carbamates and four cases as a result of the abuse of inorganic phosphorus and forty-one case as a result of the abuse of organophosphorus pesticides . The suicidal cases were seventy-four in number eight of them were saved (two men and six women) by rapid atropinization and gastric lavage on admission to hospital. The homicidal cases were two in number (two female), all of them were saved. Were also record the number of twenty cases by ingestion food or drinks contaminated with pesticides (eight male and twelve female) The common symptoms which appeared immediately after ingestion toxic substance: abdominal pain - nausea - severe weakness - vomiting. Characteristic symptoms also appeared in fatal cases secretions such as foam from the mouth and nose - cyanosis of the lips and fingers - congestion in the interior and mucous membranes visceral with the presence of gastric ulcers - were also found traces of pesticides that have been addressed in the stomach and has a characteristic odor. Samples were taken and sent to Assiut forensic laboratory of Medico-legal Department for analysis. Detection of Insecticides was done by color test, TLC, GC-MS.
