Investigation on electrical characteristics of HDPE mixed with EVA applied for recycleable power cable insulation

2012
In this paper, we discuss the electric characteristics, such as electric field distribution and its resistivity in insulation system, which affects insulation performance and reliability for each of the applications, of eco-friendly materials made by applied recyclable insulating materials of cable. These proposed materials are blended HDPE and EVA at various weight proportions. On some test specimens made using those materials, FE-SEM, DSC, FT-IR and XRD analysis were carried out for structural and chemical analysis. The insulation performances of the proposed insulators were compared with conventional XLPE, the main insulating material of CV cable, on the basis of the investigation results of AC and DC insulation performances. In addition, their validity as eco-friendly alternative insulating materials were proven by extracting superior and inferior factors, respectively. As the waste from these materials is easily processed and recycled as raw material for uses such as jacket of low voltage insulation wire, insulation layer of medium voltage cable and various products, their application is useful to reduce the expense of import materials, and the disposal of waste materials.
