Potential for a petrochemical industry in Utah

1975
The ''Potential for a Petrochemical Industry in Utah'' was assessed. Information is presented in the form of a profile of the U.S. petrochemical industry, an analysis of Utah resources as plant site factors, a summary of potential, alternative products of a Utah plant, and an overview of selected Utah petrochemical possibilities. In addition to published information, the basic data for the study were secured primarily through numerous telephone interviews and several selcted personal interviews. Such contacts were made with knowledgeable persons associated with industry, trade associations, universities, trade publications, consulting services, and federal, state, and local governments. No clear mandate resulted at this stage of the evaluation with respect to the advisability of locating a petrochemical plant in Utah. It was determined, however, that the petrochemical industry is undergoing significant change, justifying an in-depth investigation by industry as to the feasibility of a Utah plant. Utah was appraised as ranking high as a possible site for locating a petrochemical plant with respect to the availability of raw materials, land transportation, labor, fuel, and land. It also ranks high with regard to reasonable tax levels, climate, community desirability, and business environment. Areas of controversy center on raw material quality, water availability, more » environmental costs, and pipeline transportation. Any of these five factors, however, need not be looked upon unfavorably, depending on the point of view. The most serious negative factors influencing a potential petrochemical plant in Utah are the lack of nearness to the main markets and the lack of low cost transportation equivalent to barge or ship costs. In view of an expanding West, these factors over time are likely to diminish in relative importance.« less
