DECONSTRUCTION OF STEEL PLATFORMS

1991
A number of different approaches have been considered for the deconstruction and subsequent disposal of steel jacket structures. The usual options include partial or complete removal, either 'piecesmall' or in large sections, or toppling. The partial removal and toppling alternatives may be considered for platforms in deeper waters, whereas complete removal is the only option for decommissioning of platforms in shallow water. In this paper, a number of the key aspects of the deconstruction of platform in deeper waters are examined, and solutions to some of the major problem areas are put forward. The paper examines both practical design consideration, and the advanced numerical modelling which must be performed. These techniques are illustrated by reference to a design example.
