Side effects of drugs used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease

2021
Abstract Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs, i.e., donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine), as well as the N-methyl- d -aspartate receptor (NDMAR) antagonist, memantine show moderate potential in improving measurements of cognition, behavior, and activities of daily living in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. Overall, the AChEIs and memantine are considered to be relatively safe, however, as they are used in vulnerable populations, it is even more important for clinicians to be aware of potential side effects. With increased awareness, proper monitoring, correct administration, and timely alterations, these side effects can be minimized and managed effectively. This chapter of the Side Effects of Drugs Annual series captures the literature regarding the side effects of AChEIs and memantine from January 2020 to December 2020.
