Training learning on video series containing vehicles is carried out, the vehicles are roughly classified into small-sized vehicles, middle-sized vehicles and large-sized vehicles according to object vehicle region position construction region areas and exterior rectangular length characteristics; a small-sized object can be determined to be a car or a minibus by employing vehicle window position characteristic parameters; horizontal edge line detection on a 1/4-1/2 portion at a vehicle region lower portion of the large-sized object is carried out to determine whether the large-sized object is a truck or a bus. The vehicle model identification method has advantages of simple detection algorithm, strong real-time performance, relatively complete vehicle detection information, small quantities of vehicle extraction characteristics, high stability, easy-realization algorithm and high identification rate.
