Meta-Surface Optimization in 6G Sub-THz Communications

2020
We consider the usage of smart radio environments and meta-surfaces to improve the global performance of sub-THz wireless networks. To this end, we propose a comprehensive mathematical model, accounting for how the electronic orientation of the surfaces, their phase-shift and precoding all influence the resulting rate and throughput. Furthermore, we propose three different ways to make such decisions and compare their effectiveness in a small-scale scenario, finding that making simpler decisions such as statically associating users and meta-surfaces results in a performance that is comparable, albeit inferior, to more complex numerical optimization methods.
