Cucumis melo Linne is a useful agricultural life resource and a very useful resource that can be used as herbal medicine and medicinal resource. The medicinal name of C. melo is Melonis Pedicellus,a herbaceous calyx of C. melo Linne belonging to the Cucurbitaceae and has been widely used in Korean traditional herbal medicine. In this study, herbal medicinal characteristics of Melonis Pedicellus were examined and 34 herbal formulas containing Melonis Pedicellus were reviewed. This study will be a great source of further studies of calyx based herbs. Firstly, the origins of Melonis Pedicellus were compared through the Pharmacopoeia of each country. It can only be found in the Pharmacopoeias of South and North Korea, not of China, Japan and Taiwan. Secondly, the discovered ingredients in Melonis Pedicellus were researched. Fatty acid compounds were the most in it. Thirdly, the herbal medicinal perspective of Melonis Pedicellus was analyzed. It was specially used in vomiting therapy since its emetic nature is very strong. Lastly, 31old literatures from the 3th century to the 20th century were thoroughly examined. 34 herbal medicine formulas which contain Melonis Pedicellus were found in those literatures. Since Melonis Pedicellus was mostly used in vomiting therapy, most of the herbal medicine formulas were used in vomiting therapy which means the nature of this Korean herb was exactly reflected in those formulas. This study shows that the calyx of C. melo Linne was very widely used as a medicinal-purposed herb. More detailed research of the origins of Melonis Pedicellus would be required since its origin is not mentioned in most of East asian countries. This study efficiently secured old literature information by utilizing the KIOM Oasis portal provided by the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine and big data from the Korean Institute of Science and Civilization at Chonbuk National University. In the future, if you study not only the fruit, but also the stems of various plants such as persimmon stem, lotus stem and eggplant stem, it is considered to be a good material for discovering modern value from materials that can be discarded inadvertently.
