This chapter reviews the major advances in the field of genetics and explains the current state of the art. From the discovery of DNA, genome-wide association studies, to deep sequencing, the field of genetics has provided exciting biomedical breakthroughs. However, there are limitations on how much information genetics can provide regarding the causation of major diseases. This chapter will provide detail on these limitations and explain how the exposome can build upon genetic studies to provide a more complete picture of health and disease.
