A method for increasing the crash resistance of a motor vehicle, a the gap bridging block element is disposed at the adjacent in a gap between a front, an A-pillar front face of a vehicle door and an opposing outer side of the A-pillar, comprising the steps of: providing a block member that having two block parts which are connected together so that they are in an initial state under the action of an adjusting force relative to one another displaceable, whereby a length dimension of the block member is adjustable, and which can be fixed relative to one another (installation state), so that in the direction of the length dimension or acting force receiving direction, wherein an impact force auftetende receivable, attaching the block member when the vehicle door is open, wherein the block parts are arranged relative to each other so that the block member has a larger length dimension than the space in the closed A vehicle door, closing the vehicle door, wherein the other block part abuts the A-column or vehicle door and the block parts are automatically displaced relative to one another in a mounting position, and fixing the block parts relative to one another.
