Adhesive bonding of ceramics materials : A review

2000
Structural adhesive bonding of technical ceramics is increasingly used and becomes competitive with brazing because it's an easy-to-make low temperature assembly process. Various industries such as electronics, aeronautical, space, automobile, railway... are now resorting to adhesive bonding of ceramics. Materials as different as alumina, silicon carbide and aluminium nitride not only react to chemical, thermal and mechanical surface treatments but also it's possible to adjust their effects to reach optimum surface energies for adhesion. These treatments are of prime interest in surface decontamination, which avoids low cohesive interphases forming with adhesives. The best surface state for the maximum initial adhesive / ceramic adherence is the most convenient to secure durability.
