THE COMMISSIONING OF THE TUNNEL AND PUBLIC AREA VENTILATION SYSTEM SERVING THE JUBILEE LINE EXTENSION PROJECT

2001
This paper summarises the principal results obtained from a number of smoke tests performed to demonstrate the operation of the Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS). The commissioning included carrying out the standalone testing of each fan to BS 848 on site, the compressed air damper timings, PLC control operations, SCADA performance, power overload settings and comprehensive noise measurements. However, this paper concentrates on the ventilation performance of the TVS when operating a number of fans in response to a single incident. The smoke tests are described to show how the results were interpreted to obtain formal approval to open the railway and how the criteria for each type of test have been established from the design calculations to enable the parties to agree and measure the success of each test. Practical considerations for testing and selection of test equipment are considered, but detailed calculations to back up the test criteria selected for each test are not included in the paper.
