Distribution of Leucite-Bearing Rocks

1980
Leucite-bearing rocks are found in widely scattered localities all over the world (Fig. 5.1). The best known localities include volcanic fields of east and southeast Ruwenzori, Uganda; Birunga volcanic province of central Africa; West Kimberley, and New South Wales of Australia; Java and Celebes of Indonesia; the Leucite Hills of Wyoming; the Massif Central region of France, the Roman Province of Italy; Mauricia and Almaria provinces of Spain and the Laacher See district of W. Germany. In addition to these classical localities, Gittins (personal communication, 1977) has reported the occurrence of leucite-bearing rocks from the east coast of Greenland, and Baker and Rea (1978) have described leucitic rocks from Huopi, Patagonian Plateau, which is located between the Southern Andes and Lake Colhue. It should be noted here that all these localities are confined to continental regions.
