Considerations for Special Administration Techniques

2015
An atmosphere of continuous improvement drives laboratory animal work in general and primate work in particular. It is generally acknowledged that Old World primates have particular needs and requirements to enable their ethical use in the safety assessment laboratory within the spirit of the “3 Rs” (replacement, reduction, refinement) and to maximize the scientific value of the information gained by their use. This chapter examines some of the primary considerations and decisions on cost benefit, technical expertise, physiological specifics, equipment, and logistics that must be made for use of the macaque in the laboratory. Specific examples are presented to demonstrate this process in practice for a range of less common techniques including intravenous infusion, intravitreal, intradermal, subcutaneous, and capsule administration and imaging.
