A brief introduction to flow and transport in fractal porous media

Abstract It is of great significance to clarify the flow and transport of porous media with a complex structure in varied fields, such as petroleum engineering, biological science, and building materials. The application of fractal theory is an attractive approach to describe the characterization of flow behavior in porous media. In this chapter, we briefly introduce the basic framework and the recent studies on flow and transport in fractal porous media from different viewpoints, including the superiority of fractal approaches, the combination with several theories, and application in the petroleum engineering field. These analyses could provide some new ideas and methods in modelling the microstructure parameters and transport characteristics of fractal porous media.
