Pavement strength assessment for abnormal vehicles

The highway engineer must occasionally assess the effect of an abnormal vehicle on a flexible pavement. The vehicle abnormality may be due to exceptionally heavy payloads, axle configuration or specialised tyres. A mechanistic pavement analysis method is presented to determine the effect of the abnormal vehicle through the use of some case studies (A).
