A Wideband Slot Coupled Patch Antenna

2020
The design and investigation of a novel slot coupled patch antenna with a wide bandwidth have been presented in this paper. The antenna structure consists of three layers with the square radiating patch on the top, the grounded patch with three embedded slots in the middle and the L-shaped feed at the bottom. The wideband bandwidth can be achieved by properly designing the L-shaped feed and the slots. Moreover, the L-shaped feed is terminated with a circular patch to further enlarge the bandwidth. Compared with traditional aperture-coupled patch antennas, the proposed antenna can avoid the effects from other electronic devices while maintaining a relatively broad bandwidth. The simulated results have shown that the presented antenna has obtained a broadband impedance bandwidth (VSWR $\leq 2)$ of about 26% (3.45-4.5 GHz) and the total thickness of the structure is 8.8 mm (around 0.1\lambda_{b}$ at the lowest operating frequency). The simulated realized gain varies from 2.5 to 4.7dBi across the operating frequency range.
