Evaluation of Synthetic Effect of Holistic Acupuncture for Hemiplegia After Cerebral Infarction

2005
[ Objective ] To observe the synthetic effect of holistic acupuncture for hemiplegia after cerebral infarction (HACI) . [Methods] One hundred and thirteen cases of HACI were randomized into two groups: group A ( n = 63) was treated with holistic acupuncture, a therapy combined with traditional acupuncture with specific acupoints selected according to the disease stage, and group B ( n = 50) was treated with traditional acupuncture therapy. The therapeutic effect was evaluated with neurological function impairment scoring, activity of daily life (ADL), and disability rate as the parameters. The life quality of 63 cases from the community was evaluated with life quality questionnaire of SF-36. [Results] The effect of group A was superior to that of group B in decreasing the score of neurological function impairment, improving ADL and reducing disability rate. The life quality of community patients was much improved after proper rehabilitation training and treatment. [Conclusion] Holistic acupuncture is effective for the enhancement of therapeutic effect and life quality for patients with hemiplegia after cerebral infarction.
