Objective: The tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure may be associated with serious intraoperative complications such as bladder perfor ation, vascular hemorrhage caused by the insertion needle, obturator nerve injury and intestinal perforation. Such complications are generally determined by the conditions of the organs around the trocar insertion pathway. Methods: We applied the TVT procedure while the bladder was full (250q300 mL), to 102 patients with proved stress urinary incontinence, who underwent the TVT procedure during a three-year period. Results: The only intraoperative complication was one patient with a bladder perforation on one side. There were no cases of significant bleeding requiring transfusion, bowel perforation or nerve injury. Conclusions: This is the first report on the application of the TVT procedure to a full bladder, showing that this approach is remarkably effective at reducing complications.
