A Multiscale Method of Plasticity Enabling Dislocations to Seamlessly Pass Scale Interfaces

2011
In the concurrent multiscale analysis, it is difficult to have truly seamless transition between the atomistic and continuum scale. This situation is even worse when defects pass through the interfaces between different scales. It seriously limits the development of multiscale plasticity. This work proposes a new method to circumvent these notorious difficulties so that defects such as dislocations can seamlessly pass through scale interfaces. Originally proposed by the first author in 2009[1] the generalized particle (GP) multiscale modeling method serves as the foundation for the new method. It is substantially different from the so called DC multiscale methods which link the atomic and continuum region by direct coupling.
