Characteristics of scintillating fiber electromagnetic calorimeters with wavelength-shifter readout

Abstract We studied characteristics of sampling electromagnetic calorimeters comprising of lead absorber and 1 mm diameter scintillating fibers with wavelength-shifter readout using 1–5 GeV electrons. The volume ratio of lead to scintillator was kept at approximately 4:1 for compensation. Fibers were arranged to be perpendicular to incident electrons. Scintillation lights were detected by a pair of photomultiplier tubes through wavelength-shifter plates placed perpendicularly to the two ends of fibers. Two fiber assembly techniques were employed. Photoelectron statistics and energy resolution were compared with those of conventional tile scintillator calorimeter modules.
