Massive Transfusion Protocol
2021
Treatment of the acutely hemorrhaging patient involves the administration of blood products and blood product adjuvants in a timely manner in order to reduce mortality and improve overall outcomes. Development of a massive transfusion protocol is recommended by multiple authorities for treatment of patients at high risk for acute hemorrhage. A multidisciplinary team is required for protocol development, along with a thorough review of the literature. Establishing the timing, dosing, and monitoring of massive transfusion products is essential. Evidence on best practice continues to rapidly develop and change. This chapter describes the current literature and recommendations.
