Simulation of Left-Turn Storage Lengths Without Separate Signal Phase

A Monte Carlo simulation model derived to determine the storage lengths for left turns lanes without exclusive phases was described. Random arrivals were modeled for both the volumes on the left turn lane and for opposing volumes by Poisson processes. Also, departure models for both the left turn lane and the opposing lanes were described by triangular distributions that are a function of vehicle position in the queue.
