A study of green-glazed ware from England and South Carolina, USA (1760–1780)

2002
Abstract Green-glazed earthenware objects were used throughout Britain and the American colonies in the 18th century. Archaeological sherds from three known manufacturing sites (Greatbatch and Whieldon in Britain and Cain Hoy, SC in America) have been analyzed. Techniques used to characterize compositional features of the glazes include X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy with elemental analysis (SEM-EDX) and proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). The clay bodies as thin sections and as bulk were also examined applying these same techniques. The compositional features of each were then compared; the conclusions drawn were applied to the study of similar green-glazed earthenware objects in the collection of the Winterthur Museum.
