An experimental comparison of wicking abilities of fabric materials for heat pipe applications

2008
Replacement of components of a space reactor heat pipe by advanced ceramic fabrics will decrease system mass considerably. Replacement of the metal wick by a fibrous materials makes calculation of the wicking ability difficult. An experimental approach has been designed and implemented to allow for determination of the wicking ability of ceramic fabrics. This experiment’s uniqueness lies in its attempt to simulate operating conditions of the heat pipe. Variables such as material composition, surface preparation, weave type and density, and pressure/temperature variations have been cursorily examined. More extensive testing is being performed to allow for optimization of wick structure.
