Serum folate and colorectal adenoma in Korean adults (628.18)
2014
We investigated the association between serum folate levels and colorectal adenoma in a case-control study of Korean adults. Participants underwent colonoscopy, and provided blood specimens and information on their socio-demographic status and other risk factors for colorectal adenoma in a university hospital. Serum folate levels were measured by using the electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Colorectal adenoma cases were determined through colonoscopy and histologic examinations. We included 113 cases (58 men and 55 women) of colorectal adenoma and 255 controls (69 men and 186 women). We calculated the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using a multivariate logistic regression model. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found no significant association between serum folate levels and colorectal adenoma; multivariate ORs (95% CIs) for the highest tertile compared to the lowest tertile were 0.86 (0.31 to 2.39) in men and 1.12 (0.51 to 2.46) in women.
