The unit has a light source (15) at the centre of the elliptical or parabolic reflector (11). A light stop (19) is provided in the path of the reflected beam between the reflector (11) and an objective lens (21) for limiting the size of the main beam. The optical system, e.g. a secondary reflector (12) is fitted above or below the main reflector (11) for providing an auxiliary light beam using light rays which are not used for the main beam.
