SOLAR PUMP: MITIGATING THE AGRO POWER CRISIS IN BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is a country where agro power crisis has become a major problem. Over the years farmers in Bangladesh ha ve been dependent on diesel and electricity driven pumps for irrigation purposes. Inconsistency between power demand and supply, environmental degradation etc have driven the need to explore alternative and sustainable technologies for irrigation. Bestowed with enormous solar radiation Bangladesh can look for solar powered irrigation pumps to mitigate the present crisis. This paper deals with the techno economic feasibility of solar powered irrigation and its role as a key to sustainable development of agro economy of Bangladesh. It performed a comparative analysis on the basis of performance,cost,environment friendliness between existing diesel pumps and solar pumps. It also implies the role of solar pumps as a potential key factor towards green revolution in Bangladesh. It draws the attention of the government and private organizations to invest more in the flourish and popularization of solar powered irrigation pumps.
