Urban Habitus and Crime: An Empirical Study on Dhaka City

The study has been conducted to known the crime patterns in different areas of Dhaka city and to analyze the relation of crime with the urban habitus of the Dhaka city. The ecological setup has also have been studied to reveal the causes of crime in the city. Nature of crime varies in the different environmental setting of city. Over urbanization and unequal development of city leads to a heterogeneous culture on the basis of socio-economic condition within the city. Regarding that social environment has been differed according to the Park and Burges’ “Concentric ZoneModel (Vold, 1998). The study finds out that other than the residential areas of the city is more prone to various types of crime including violent crime, only the residential areas of the city shows that the crime rate is low according to the theory of concentric zone. Other zones are not characterized accordingly as the theory mentions. Another reason of high crime rate is that the city is over population, and city dwellers are not economically solvent and educated, unemployment rate and floating population rate is very high.
