Analysing insect populations: what limits insect abundance?

This paper considers the question of what limits insect abundance. An introductory discussion of the theory of population growth and the study of insect populations is followed by a review of the mechanisms which may contribute to population limitation. A range of opinions and evidence is presented and the article concludes with a synthesis of current ideas.
