Prenatal diagnosis by fetoscopy with subsequent normal delivery: report of a case.

1976
This patient, who proved to have a postinflammatory reaction of the uterus and adnexa, had microscopic reports that caused true concern on frozen section because of the possibility of a true neoplastic lesion. Many cases have been reported pertinent to the kidney under the name of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and in the lung as inflammatory pseudotumor. Several other names have also been given to this condition including xanthomas, fibroxanthomas, histiocytes, sclerosing hemagiomas, pseudotumors, and postinflammatory pseudotumor. In these past reports, there was always a history of chronic supperative infection of the affected organ with a mass found afterward which was nonresponsive to therapy. Although its exact etiology is unknown, several possible factors have been suggested such as (1) ineffective or nonappropriate antibiotic therapy, (2) a specific offending but as yet undefined bacterial infection, or (3) an abnormality in lipid metabolism. The clinical course of this condition is benign. The treatment is removal of the affected tissue. Such therapy usually brings with it a good prognosis.
