Espasmo acomodativo en la infancia
2018
Objective: To define the clinical features of infantile accommodative spasm in our area and to describe these patients response to treatment. Methods: We present a series of 10 cases followed and
treated from 2015 to 2017 in out-patients clinic. We have collected epidemiological characteristics,
data exploration and treatment carried out, as well as the response to treatment. Results: In our series, the average age has been around 10 years and 5 months and shows a clear female predominance (80%). The main reason for consultation was a reduction in distance and near vision (80%) and
headache associated with blurred or double vision (20%). None of our patients showed abnormal convergence or impaired pupil reaction. Treatment consisted in cycloplegia for 6 patients, glasses
were used in 4 of them. Three patients were referred to visual therapy to work the accommodation
and vergences. The last patient went under psychotherapy at parents request. All accommodative
spasm resolved, so symptoms disappeared. Conclusions: Although this is a short case series, both
vision therapy and cycloplegic drops managed to successfully solve the accommodative spasm in
our patients.
