Clinical Applications of MR Imaging in Alien Hand Syndrome

2010
Objective To evaluate the clinical values of MR imaging in alien hand syndrome(AHS),and to improve the understanding of AHS.Materials and Methods MRI and clinical data of 5 patients with AHS were analyzed retrospectively, including 3 males and 2 females with aged 38 years to 58 years, mean age of 46.2 years. The symptoms of all patients included physically hypodynamia, reactional torpor and lalopathy,as well as the phenomenon of uncoordination between two hands and competitional conflicts. Results Corpus callosum infarcts were detected on MRI in all patients, which appeared low signal intensity on T1WI and high signal intensity on T2WI,and also high signal intensity on FLAIR sequence. The lesions were detected at right splenium in 1 case, left genu in 2 cases and diffuse to single-side of corpus callosum in 2 cases respectively. Conclusion MRI play an important role in detecting"responsible lesions"for AHS.
