Experimental study of material characteristics of collagen type II and its repairing efficacy to cartilage defect.

2009
[Objective] To study the material characteristics of collagen typeⅡ and its efficacy in repairing cartilage defect.[Methods]Differences in material characteristics such as mechanism,pore-diameter between the two kinds of materials were compared. The cartilage defect model of rabbit knee joint were constructed. In group A,cartilage defects was repaired by spongy-collagen type Ⅱ.In group B,by membrane-collagen type Ⅱ while group C received no treatment. In 2,6,12 weeks postoperatively, the specimens were sacrificed and repair effects were observed with histological staining method.[Results]Significant differences had been found between the two kinds of material. In group A,the mean diameter was(93.26±38.41)μm and the mean modulus of elasticity was(0.098±0.0017)MP/m2,which were better than those in group B.In group A,6 weeks postoperatively,a great deal of neogenetic cartilage was observed and in 12 weeks postoperatively, the shape and maturity of neogenetic cartilage were observed close to normal level in group A,which had advantages over those in group B、C.[Conclusion]Spongy-collegan type Ⅱ has fairly rational biomechanics performances and proved to have significant efficacy in cartilage defect. To conclude,it is a kind of tissue-engineering matrix with good material characteristics.
