2015
EnglishObjective: to explore tobacco smoking in waterpipe (shisha) among a group of Formal Professional Training students in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands). Method: a qualitative exploratory and descriptive study through a self-administered survey in 40 Professional Training students, through a structured 16-question questionnaire. Results: of the students included in the survey, 77.5% had tried a shisha on some occasion; seven of them declared that they smoked it habitually. Half of students smoked flavoured tobacco with their friends. The reasons to smoke in shisha were curiosity, thinking that it is not as harmful as cigarettes, and to try something new. A 39% of them believed that smoking in shisha had harmful effects for their health, and over half of them stated that smoking cigarettes is more harmful than smoking in shisha. Conclusions: the use of waterpipe is currently classified as an emerging threat for populations and communities, and this seems to be also confirmed in this study; therefore, it would be necessary to conduct more studies, both qualitative and quantitative, in the national and regional setting, in order to assess the prevalence, use practices, beliefs and attitudes towards waterpipe tobacco smoking, as well as to design health education interventions as prevention for the effects of its use
