Study of. pi. sup +. pi. sup minus transitions from the. Upsilon. (3 S ) and a search for the h sub b

1991
We have investigated the transitions {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{Upsilon}(1{ital S}), {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{Upsilon}(2{ital S}) and the cascade process {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{Upsilon}(2{ital S})+{ital X},{Upsilon}(2{ital S}){r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{Upsilon}(1{ital S}), both in the exclusive decay mode, with the daughter {Upsilon} state decaying into two leptons, and in the inclusive decay mode, with the daughter {Upsilon} state decaying hadronically. Results are presented on the branching fractions and properties of the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} system. The {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} invariant-mass spectra for the decays {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{Upsilon}(1{ital S}) and {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{Upsilon}(2{ital S}) are measured and compared with theoretical predictions. We also present the results of a search for the {ital h}{sub {ital b}}(1 {sup 1}{ital P}{sub 1}) and {Upsilon}(1 {sup 3}{ital D}) states in inclusive {Upsilon}(3{ital S}) decays, and for the exclusive decay {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{eta}{Upsilon}(1{ital S}).
