Preparation and Characterization of GdCl_3-Gd_2O_3 Expanded Graphite Composite Materials

In this paper,expanded graphite and GdCl_3 saturated solution were chosen as raw materials to prepare GdCl_3- Gd_2O_3-EG using the chemical impregnation method,which contains CdCl_3 of 3rd stage and Cd_2O_3 of 4th stage.Morphologies, composition and structures of the products were characterized by FESEM,EDS and XRD.It is found that GdCl_3 -EG was of mixed structure of 2nd and 3rd stages at small m(Cd_2O_3)/m(EG) ratio,then of stable 3rd stage with increasing m(Cd_2O_3)/ m(EG) ratio.Cd_2O_3 was obtained by the reaction between Gd~(3+) and oxygen groups from EG,and some Cd_2O_3 entered interlayers of expanded graphite,but Cd_2O_3-EG kept stable 4th stage structure,which was independent of m(Cd_2O_3)/m(EG) ratio.
